Argan tree
Argan trees grow only in High and Central Atlas region, in the Valley of Sous River and on the coast between Agadir and Essaouira. A knotty and low in height tree lives up to 1000 years and gives olive-like fruits, which are rich in argan oil. The oil- extraction process is both time consuming and strength-requiring job, which according to ancient traditions is done by women only. After the fruit is ripe it is collected and dried. Once it’s dry enough it is peeled and the nut is crushed. From the 2-3 seeds found in the Argan nut oil is extracted. 80kg of fruits are required to produce 1 liter of argan oil. First extraction process gives oil that is very light in color; the lighter the oil, the higher the quality.Years ago argan oil was used only in the preparation of food; today it is used also by cosmetic and medical industries. One believes that argan oil helps to heal skin problems, wounds and radiculitis. Creams containing argan oil help to smoothen skin and prevent wrinkles. Locals say that mixing argan oil with crushed almonds and honey gives the effect of a Viagra pill. Traditional medicine claims argan oil to stabilize the blood pressure, improve liver functions, strengthen hair and reduce appetite.
Argan fruits are the favorites of the “flying” goats, who are capable of climbing the tree in order to obtain this dessert. Goat on a tree is such an unusual sight that the locals try to make money on it, even though getting goats on a tree via untraditional herding methods is prohibited.
